In Antiquity, dogs and cats already lived alongside humans. The Egyptians revered cats and sometimes built small wicker or wooden shelters for them. The Romans, great lovers of guard dogs, built the first 'caniles': rudimentary stone or wooden shelters attached to the house.
In the Middle Ages, the kennel took the form of a simple plank hut installed in the farmyard. The dog found shelter there at night and in bad weather. Lords, on the other hand, reserved stone-built kennels — often heated by fire — for their hunting dogs.
The Renaissance saw the emergence of the companion dog among nobles. Small carved-wood indoor kennels, velvet cushions and ornate baskets: the dog's comfort became a sign of refinement. Cats often had cosy nooks near fireplaces.
The industrial era standardised the kennel as we imagine it: a small pointed-roof wooden house with a cut-out doorway, often raised off the ground. It was painted to match the house, with the dog's name carved above the door. This was also the era when the first modular kennels appeared.
After the war, moulded plastic kennels arrived on the market: light, waterproof, easy to clean. Major brands developed complete ranges, from small dogs to giant breeds. Resin kennels became widespread in gardens, while wood remained the choice of purists.
Today, the kennel combines noble materials, effective thermal insulation and refined design. Bituminous roofs, raised floors, windproof doors, integrated heating, cooling mats for summer: every detail contributes to the animal's well-being. Connected kennels with cameras and temperature control are emerging, extending a thousand-year-old story of attachment to our companions.
